There are various different banks and accounts which are open to people living in the United Kingdom.  There is a short list of them below.  Be aware that to open a Portuguese bank account, you will need a "Cartão de Contribuinte" which is similar to a National Insurance Number.  This can be obtained upon your visit to Portugal from the local "Loja do Cidadão".  You can obtain the address from the following website: http://www.lojadocidadao.pt/Contactos/?contactContext=pacs#TBN Please be aware, however, that this website is in Portuguese.

Normal day-to-day banking in Portugal is more expensive than in the UK and many of the facilities that we take for granted actually carry a charge.
